Significance of output:

In this paper a novel fundamental concept for designing acoustic metamaterials using active control techniques is developed. Based on a series Helmholtz resonator model it is shown that with the addition of actively controlled forces to locally resonant structures in the transmission medium, a material with negative effective density and elasticity can be achieved. This enables the development of a material with tuneable acoustic transmission properties , an essential feature for practical application. The work has attracted the interest of the MOD and BAE Systems and will be further developed during 2011 within a BAE Systems CASE studentship award.
