Contributor to the 6th Tallinn Applied Art Triennial, 'THE ART OF COLLECTING'. Exhibitor of 'To Produce: A study on the monomater idea'. Grand Prix prize winner.
Draper was awarded the Triennial Grand Prix. The Jury commented on her work: “Spanish jeweller Gemma Draper presents us with a still life consisting of six objects, all very different with regards to their material, colour, and formal expression. This is a strange and secretive collection, obviously not put together at random, but carefully executed and arranged. With great subtlety, the work urges us to reflect on what it is that actually constitutes a collection, and why certain objects – despite being different in character – appear as belonging to the same family.” Draper’s title: 'To produce. A study on the monomater idea' is an examination of the key concepts that she utilises in the production of her work, and the tools that play a central role in the forming and presence of the work. In a process of “unmaking” the artist creates a collection of deliberate frozen moments. The result is a set of “stills” which Draper has brought into existence by cutting, carving, polishing, covering, forming the materials into new configurations. The Tallinn Applied Art Triennial focused on the new, the topical and the unexpected in contemporary applied art and design practices. The 2012 Triennial welcomed entries that dealt with themes of “Collecting and Collections”. Apart from traditional applied art the triennial also welcomed inter- and cross-disciplinary practices. The 6th Tallinn Applied Art Triennial was curated by Love Jönsson (Sweden) and juried by Love Jönsson (Sweden), Monika Auch (Holland), Kadri Mälk (Estonia), Kai Lobjakas (Estonia), and Morten Espersen (Denmark).
