Portraits: Nishimera, Cuba and England

The group exhibition at the Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum in collaboration with two Japanese photographers (Takahiro Ogawa and Shinichi Takahashi) was entitled ‘Portraits: Nishimera, Cuba and England’. Tsuchiya’s contribution consisted of 15 photographs of the elderly, entitled 'Growing Old Gracefully'.

Tsuchiya created portraits of active senior citizens in North East England as an archive of the contemporary healthcare activities outside of healthcare institutions. By focusing on their activities, Tsuchiya aimed to introduce and present senior citizens as active healthcare practitioners who have wisdom and rich experiences, rather than as fragile customers of healthcare services. Her photographs were presented across various media in both U.K. and Japan, and accessed by both art and healthcare audiences. Tsuchiya is a founder member of the Japan Photo Therapists Network, which is a non-profit organization based in Tokyo, Japan, that aims to contribute knowledge about how the practice of photography enhances the lives of people in healthcare settings (Available at: http://www.shashin-ryoho.com/home/english/).

Tsuchiya's contribution was also presented in part at 'Pictures of Health: Growing Old Gracefully', at the Baltic Contemporary Art Centre. This event was organized by the Medical School of Newcastle University to celebrate the anniversary of 175 years of teaching in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
