Direct coloration of textiles with photochromic dyes. Part 2 : The effect of solvents on the colour change of photochromic textiles
This is the second paper in a series on coloration of textiles using photochromic dyes, as disperse dyes for polyester. Dyes suitable for textile applications are now routinely synthesized in our laboratories allowing textile designers, including PhD students, access to unique materials allowing creative exploitation of their dynamic light-induced colour change properties. The paper investigates in particular the solvent-dependence of the photochromic response, establishing chemical principles supported by computer-aided theoretical studies. Christie was awarded the Worshipful Dyers of London Gold Medal Award for research excellence for 2009 based on this paper, together with Part 1 in the series.
