Paranoid Androids. Per una pragmatica teorica del film intaliano de genere

Italian. This chapter proposes a theoretical approach to the study of genres in contemporary Italian cinema. I apply a specific perspective derived from Rick Altman’s seminal pragmatic approach to the study of film genres as an alternative to more traditional models that tend to see genres as pre-coded texts in terms of themes, iconography and audience expectations. The pragmatic approach takes account of multiple factors including production and distribution systems; societal and cultural elements; and reception trends. This chapter demonstrates how a general awareness of these factors among contemporary Italian filmmakers has accompanied a revival of genres in recent production output.
