Its 10,000-word introduction and extensive notes situate the novel as a fundamental yet neglected text in both the history of Victorian women’s writing and the development of crime fiction. Positioning the novel as historically ground-breaking, the edition takes a step towards realigning critical thinking about the development of mid-Victorian crime writing and female authorship.
