Commissioned text for Palgrave Macmillan’s Performance and Technology book series; editors based at Brunel University.
Draws on William James’ writing on ‘the stream of consciousness’ to examine artist Bruce Gilchrist’s use of the body as a laboratory to explore inarticulate thought. Understandings emerging from this text concern Gilchrist’s efforts to translate the immaterial and somatic into something
material and visible; to make the body speak its unconscious experience.
Based on a long-running collaborative enquiry (since the 1990s): for example,
