Significance of output:

Supercontinuum devices are currently limited to optical fibre and have issues of poor spectral profile. This paper describes the underlying physics of operation of a planar waveguide based supercontinuum device and non-linear optical processes involved. Applications for this device would be found in bio-sensing where there is a need for a light source on a chip, medical imaging (OCT), telecommunications, and optical spectroscopy. The device forms a building block to create a widely tuneable Laser (OPO / OPA) on a chip. 2 granted and licensed patents relate to this work (US6856737, EP1517173).
