Bimodal hearing benefit for speech recognition with competing voice in cochlear implant subject with normal hearing in contralateral ear
Significance of output:
Cochlear implants can restore hearing to deaf people. An unusual cochlear implant patient with normal hearing in the other ear - he received the implant to alleviate tinnitus - allowed investigation into the effect of adding natural acoustic sound to cochlear implant listening. The amount of filtered sound presented to his normal-hearing ear was gradually increased. Low frequency sound provided a super-additive benefit to his speech understanding. Extrapolating this to more than 250,000 regular cochlear implant users worldwide suggests that hearing aid use on the other ear may improve performance, even with very limited residual hearing.
