Significance of output:

In 2009/10, over 26 million tonnes of waste was managed by local authorities in England and through adopting more efficient joint working and logistics strategies, over £770m could be saved annually, 27% of the current expenditure on waste management by local authorities. Improving collection vehicle routeing and scheduling strategies is vital to reducing operating costs and this paper describes case study examples of how UK authorities have benefitted from vehicle routeing and scheduling applications to appraise alternative operating methods. The paper has been published as an extended best practice guide by the Department for Transport (www.freightbestpractice.org.uk/download.aspx?pid=5520&action=save).
