Additional information

Three methods were proposed and examined in this work, using a CFD code to demonstrate the potential improvement in engine thrust and the reduction of the impact on the environment. This paper was awarded the 2010 Kenneth Harris James Prize by the Space Division of the IMechE and the 2010 George Stephenson Prize by the IMechE for innovation and contribution to the area. Pratt & Whitney has implemented the translating nozzle technology which is one of the methods examined in this work.
