This paper presents the most developed method thus far for measuring the refractive index gradient in biological lenses and the first to produce profiles of 3-dimensional gradients. Measurements were conducted at the Spring8 synchrotron in Japan using Talbot grating interferometry which has broad reach in analysis and visualisation of tissue. The findings are highly significant because they show, for the first time, that eye lenses from terrestrial species may have discontinuities; this has important implications for the design of intraocular lens implants.
