The work was funded under EPSRC-SUPERGEN/SHEC. This paper was the first to show the effect of pH, applied voltage and temperature on the operation of a novel scalable bioelectrical hydrogen producing system. The use of bioelectrical devices for the treatment of liquid wastes and production of renewable energy vectors such as hydrogen has developed into a significant new research theme, which could result in a radical transformation of existing wastewater treatment systems. The determination of these operational parameters is a key part in developing this transformation. This work has influenced research directions for groups in America, Europe and Asia.
