Additional information

<23> Non-local means is a recent method for noise reduction which has become popular in the image processing community. However, like many algorithms, the statistical basis for the approach was never formally derived. This paper is significant in that it attempts to explain the success of the method by relating the ideas to Bayesian probability. Such a level of theoretical understanding is expected to be of importance when applying these methods in the context of sensitive decision support applications, such as medical image interpretation.
