Double-weighted statement

This book draws on more than ten years of research in libraries and archives across Britain and Ireland. Uncovering fairy tales in penny weeklies, adult and children’s monthlies, little magazines and the socialist press, it draws on a wide range of sources neglected by other scholars. The monograph uses this extensive research base to establish a new thesis: that the press was central to the popularity of the fairy tale in the Victorian period. The book uses this fresh research to offer new insights into both the history reading and the politicisation of the fairy tale.
