Double-weighted statement

This book is based on extensive archival research into Elizabeth Bishop’s papers including drafts, notebooks, letters, photographs and paintings, at Vassar College. This research began in 1999. The book develops a complex argument, weaving together different kinds of evidence, contextual, biographical, and text-based, to produce an innovative reading of Elizabeth Bishop’s writing, and to develop new ideas about poetic practice and how we read poetic process. In terms of both methodology and its understanding of theories of art from the 1930s onwards, this book extends beyond its immediate subject and is conceptually rich and original.
