English abstract

This article examines the way women and women's issues are depicted in the first English translation from the eleventh century classical Japanese prose narrative, The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari). The translator, Suematsu Kencho, was a Japanese Government sponsored exchange student in England during the 1880s and saw The Tale of Genji as a means of communicating to European readers the level of advancement of Japanese society.
