English abstract

This article examines the first vernacular Japanese translations of the classical Japanese prose narrative The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari, c.1008). The vernacular translations were made during the first half of the eighteenth century. The article argues that the translators intended their work to function as a kind of commentary for readers with lower levels of literacy.
