English abstract

This article explores the reception history of “Ise monogatari” by examining the intertextual rewritings produced in the Edo period. Intralingual translation is analysed through the study of “Ise monogatari hira kotoba” (1678); minimal parody is studied by looking at “Yaro nise monogatari” (c. 1660) and “Okashi otoko” (1662); expanding transformation is investigated by considering “Ima Narihira monogatari” (1689). By examining under or un-researched primary sources, this article expands the findings of previous studies (Katagiri 1987, Ishikawa 1987, Bowring 1992) and analyses the process of canonization of “Ise monogatari”.
