This paper presents multidisciplinary research in healthcare robotics that combines expertise in empathic and adaptive interaction, robotic learning, and environmental sensing. These aspects are often overlooked when designing robotic technology for home use. The paper, which is an output of the FP7 ACCOMPANY project, builds on a conference publication that won the best paper award at the HSI2013 conference, by providing more analyses and theoretical foundations. It also provides a framework for evaluating multi-disciplinary healthcare technology.
