Additional information

This article, authored by myself and Sharon Smith (who died before it was completed) is intended to provide a set of original claims in a new field, summarizing material collected from primary research. The journal requested that we focus on thematic observations rather than respondent’s statements, to introduce the cultural politics of western Buddhism. On the basis of the groundbreaking material in the article, I was invited to significantly expand the data in a newly commissioned monograph with the prestigious Numen Series in Religion (forthcoming 2015). This book will have shared authorship with Smith, and Yip, (from the QSS project).
