Additional information

This paper provides, for the first time, the measured central line strain path for a soil specimen being taken by the tube sampler. Engineers were aware of the sampling disturbance problem for at least a century, and the strain path theory was developed around 30 years ago. However, no experimental strain path data previously existed. Geotechnics (lthreadgold@geotechnics.co.uk) state this project is “of considerable interest to this company and the industry”. Arup (stewart.jarvis@arup.com) believe “this [research] is likely to result in more efficient geotechnical design and thereby be of benefit to society as a whole by virtue of cheaper construction”.
