Additional information

This paper was the first to extend value stream mapping to include a methodology and tool for modelling multiple manufacturing processes and dynamic instances of processes. Consequently, manufacturing systems can now be virtually redesigned to ensure better lead times, cost and quality. The methodology and process simulator were used by Cruz-Machedo (President, Portuguese Institute of Industrial Engineering - vcm@fct.unl.pt), for his ‘lean and green paradigm’ for performance analysis. Also Schulze, (Chair for Innovation, ETH Zurich - aschulze@ethz.ch), used the methodology for her 4I framework of organisational learning. Both approaches are currently included in the portfolio applied in WMG’s SME programme.
