Additional information

<28> Originality: This work identified for the first time a neural circuit that regulates the salience of memory formation in the simple insect brain. It combined the mining of neuronal circuit databases and comparisons with known anatomical circuitry with advanced transgenic and behavioural analysis.

Significance: This work demonstrated that memories in simple insects are only established if they are relevant to the internal state of the organism. This has altered the methods used for memory assessment in Drosophila.

Rigour: Cell is one of the top ranked biological science journals.
