Development of specimen-specific finite element models of human vertebrae for the analysis of vertebroplasty
Presents the first comparison of specimen-specific computer models of human vertebrae against cadaveric data, for both intact specimens and those augmented with bone cement. Discoveries about cement-in-bone modelling made possible extension of application to further clinical cases. Methods were applied to a larger vertebral cohort through EPSRC Challenging Engineering grant (EP/F010575/1), and now to proof of concept funding with Simpleware (p.young@simpleware.com). The work led to considerable media interest including EPSRC YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM84qVXYjTY) and BBC coverage (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-12606144), plus Jones awarded prestigious British Science Association Media Fellowship (2010, http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/science-society/media-fellowships).
