Taming the Beast : Guided Self-organization of Behavior in Autonomous Robots
<02> Originality: Self-organising control induces critical behaviour in autonomous robots which is shown to be modifiable by weak information about a given goal. The presented methods are derived from reinforcement learning theory or heuristics ("learning from hints").
Significance: Provides a practical solution of the exploration-exploitation dilemma for active agents. This research implies also the importance of autonomous learning in general learning tasks. Best paper award at "From Animals to Animats 11" the main conference on the simulation of adaptive behaviour. The algorithms are now part of the free robot simulator "lpzrobots".
Rigour: The study uses physically realistic robot simulations.
