Double-weighted statement

This 100,000-word monograph draws on extensive research in African and UK archives, supported by AHRC and British Academy funding. The testimonies of over 400 colonial officials serving in Africa between 1900 and 1939 were examined to ensure that the prosopographical remit of the study was sufficiently empirically grounded. The prolonged period of research enabled the work to be the first comprehensive examination of colonial officials’ attitudes towards governance across sub-Saharan Africa, and of the role played by intellectual networks in the formation of such attitudes.
