This research output merits double-weighting because it represents the generation of a particularly complex thesis based on especially complex primary sources. Previous scholarship has largely rejected the possibility of extracting a ‘fiscal history’ from the problematic evidence available for the period in question , let alone applied the theoretical framework deployed here, so this book has in effect had to create a history from scratch.
