A series-dynamic-resistor-based converter protection scheme for doubly-fed induction generator during various fault conditions
The paper presents a new over-current protection approach for the popular wind power generation system – DFIG (doubly-fed induction generator). It shows an alternative option to the industrially widely-used ‘Crowbar’ approach by fundamentally changing the circuit topology from parallel into series to overcome the reactive power consumption issue. For the first time, the 3-phase over-current expressions under unbalanced fault conditions are derived which is the basis for more advanced protection system design. The approach has been followed by three subsequent publications by the authors in international journals, and five presentations in top international conferences e.g.
