Additional information

This research paper describes permanent magnet motor design for sensorless operation whilst simultaneously meeting stringent aerospace operating specifications. For the first time, a low-speed signal injection-based sensorless rotor position estimation algorithm is combined with finite element analysis and incorporated into the motor design procedure. The collaborative project was funded by Goodrich Corporation University Technology Centre (UTC) [£130k p.a., 2009-present, Chris.Enderby@goodrich.com] where sensorless control is a major theme and which has led to the UK’s first fully sensorless start-up of a permanent magnet flight surface actuator. In addition, the UTC has contributed to the development of the ‘more-electric’ Airbus A380.
