Additional information

Photographic installation commissioned (£2000.00 fee + 2 funded research visits) for an exhibition of 10 international artists: “Schwerinblicke – Künstlersichten”, Staatliches Museum Schwerin (capital city of Mecklenburg), Germany, April – July 2010 celebrating the 850th anniversary of the museum. “The Staatliches Museum Schwerin holds the largest German collection of works of Marcel Duchamp.”

The exhibited works consisted of the largest kinetic photographic installation of my career (“Waterfalls Fireflies III”), using a bespoke projection space: 5m x 7m x 4m, as well as an independent series of 5 backlit photographs: “Deluge”. The works explore the problems and potential of simulating representations (a representational strategy theorised by Donald Brook since 1969 and central to my current research and lengthy correspondence with Brook) and incorporate diapositive images projected through thermal air currents from 3 candles, situated directly in front of the projector. The work seeks to pose a double contradiction by using fire to create convincing watery motion upon the ceiling of the space. Commissioned by curator Claudia Schönfeld both works were intended to compliment the theme of “views of the city”: Schwerin is known locally as “the city of lakes”. This research is also informed by a longstanding interest in the challenges, potential and significance of water as a vital yet ungovernable ‘medium’.

This exhibition also included a large format 168 page full colour catalogue and a 1500 word essay on my work: (ISBN: 978-3-86106-115-1) which draws direct parallels between my work in the exhibition and 3 pieces by Marcel Duchamp contained within the collection of the museum. The work was also used as the cover image of the catalogue. I also gave a public lecture at the Staatliches Museum Schwerin about my research on the 5th May 2010 and the exhibition has been featured local and national press on numerous occasions.
