Optimizing the shape of a surge-and-pitch wave energy collector using a genetic algorithm
This EPSRC Supergen Marine-funded research describes the optimisation of the design of the prime interface of a floating wave energy device. A genetic algorithm is employed, allowing for the evolution of novel, un-imaginable shapes of wave converters that could increase energy yield. A benchmark collector shape is proposed, against which the optimized shapes are compared. This study formed the basis of an Applied Physics Letters experimental paper (103 (2013) 103901), an ASME paper in Nantes, France (OMAE 2013), a patent application and currently forms the basis of EPSRC Supergen Marine Phase III research.
