This was the first paper to offer a method for calculating the performance of tubes which are important for digital TV broadcasting and particle accelerators. The method described is sufficiently accurate for conceptual design calculations and provides insight into the design of IOTs. It is based on a paper presented at the 2009 IEEE Vacuum Electronics Conference (IVEC) in Rome at which the author received the 2009 IVEC Award for Excellence in Vacuum Electronics. The paper excited unusual interest from industry (E2V Technologies (UK) and L-3 Communications (USA)) and an invitation to submit an extended version to the journal.
