Additional information

This paper reported interdisciplinary work (manufacturing engineering - material science), produced by continuing a previous EPSRC project (EP/C00194X/1). It is one of the first papers to experimentally relate direct metal deposition (DMD) conditions to final residual stresses and the first to do this accounting for pulsed laser parameters. Advanced neutron diffraction methods (obtained in collaboration with The Institute Laue-Langevin, France: Dr.D. Hughes, hughes@ill.eu) and the newly-proven contour method are used to give good resolution in the stress distributions and high confidence in the results.
