Astrid Kirchherr - A Retrospective
Astrid Kirchherr - A Retrospective exhibited over one-hundred rare photographs and ephemera exploring the life and work of the German photographer. This second part of two related exhibitions and books (Ed. Fallows, C. and Clough, M., Liverpool University Press/The University of Chicago Press, 2010) aimed to re-assess Kirchherr's work, re-position her significance in twentieth-century photography, and to place her photography in a wider context for the first time. Working closely with Kirchherr, Fallows gained unparalleled access to her photographic archives, and the in-depth interviews by Fallows with Kirchherr, her friends and colleagues, together with contributions by Bracewell, M., Savage, J. et al, provide a unique insight into the life and work of the photographer. The book, containing many previously unpublished and uncropped photographs by Kirchherr, subsequently became the pre-auction archive directory at Guernsey’s, New York (2011). The preceding exhibition and book Stuart Sutcliffe - A Retrospective (21/08/08-31/01/09) aimed to re-assess and re-locate the work of Sutcliffe in an art historical context for the first time. The project published long-term research into the life and work of the artist and combined a unique exploration of Sutcliffe’s art with details of the contributions he made to both The Beatles and the Liverpool and Hamburg art scenes. The book contains an in-depth interview by Fallows with Kirchherr, contributions by Kuspit D., Savage J. et al, and many previously unpublished photographs. The exhibition was commissioned as the inaugural showcase event at the Victoria Gallery & Museum, the University of Liverpool’s refurbished original red-brick building for Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008. Reviews included: Frieze, Issue 120, Jan/Feb 2009 (M. Bracewell); and Saatchi Online Highlights of 2008. The two exhibitions received 51,731 visitors. Both exhibitions feature in Michael Bracewell: The Space Between, Selected Writings on Art (Ed. Globus, D., Riding House, London, 2012. pp.38-41, pp.42-50).
