Dynamic assessment of the floc morphology, bacterial diversity and integron content of an activated sludge reactor processing hospital effluent
This paper describes the output of EU funded research (£515k) on micropollutants arising from buildings in the healthcare sector.
It investigated, for the first time, the risk of hospital effluents as a point source for microbiologically induced antibiotic resistance in the built and natural environment.
The work has received further EU funding (£1.8M; noPILLS project; www.nweurope.eu/index.php?act=project_detail&id=5396) for continuation in close collaboration with Scottish Water and – specifically on antibiotic resistance - academic and industrial partner organisations in France (SIPIPEL; www.graie.org/Sipibel/index.html).
