Additional information

Sandwich struts are susceptible to triggering local and global buckling simultaneously, which can be highly dangerous. However, core material shearing provides significant technical challenges and certain assumptions can affect model predictions significantly. Study comparing analytical models based on Timoshenko and higher-order beam theories was conducted in conjunction with benchmark FE modelling. Governing parameters affecting the behaviour were identified and this research has led to developments for sandwich panels with combined loading (doi:10.1093/imamat/hxq061) and for those with functionally graded core materials (doi:10.1061/(ASCE)EM.1943-7889.0000470). Invited presentations at an overseas research seminar (Wits, Johannesburg, 2010) and at an international conference (ASCE-ASME-SES, Blacksburg, USA, 2009).
