Before Podoleanu entered the field of eye imaging, fluorescence was performed using a separate instrument. Podoleanu invented an instrument providing structure and fluorescence simultaneously (US Patent US6769769). This is the result of a transatlantic joint collaboration led by Podoleanu with clinicians in the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYEEI) and with a company, OTI-Inc-Canada to validate the unique diagnostic capabilities of the novel instrument on patients at NYEEI. This paper along with other related publications led to Podoleanu being named a Fellow of SPIE and a Fellow of OSA for achievements in ophthalmic imaging.
