Additional information

This theoretical study of engineered tissue growth reported in this paper has been the first publication to successfully model cartilage tissue growth on the basis of a prior knowledge of cell population and extra-cellular matrix production and destruction rates. The work came out of the EPSRC Grand Challenge project “Regenerative Medicine – a New Industry” led by Prof David Williams at Loughborough University and in collaboration with Keele University and Nottingham University (£4,200,000). It feeds into ongoing activity in the manufacture of mechanically stimulated intervertebral disk tissues.
