ICH-2: Future mobile communications systems require base-stations that can be upgraded as data demand increases. This necessitates reconfigurable filters with adaptive control of centre frequency/bandwidth/transfer characteristics – something that is not provided with present technology. We solve this problem here by introducing adjustable coupling elements into switchable delay line filters. Initial results demonstrate more than 100% bandwidth tuneability. This led to collaboration with Filtronic Wireless through a fully-funded PhD project (£115,000, 2010-2014) to apply this technique to 4G mobile communications base-stations. New theoretical filter designs are also being exploited by ComDev (ming.yu@comdev.ca) to reduce the mass/cost of future communications satellites.
