Electrically pumped photonic-crystal terahertz lasers controlled by boundary conditions
AGD-1: High power quantum cascade lasers have the potential to create a step-change in the uptake of terahertz frequency technology. However, a current limitation is the quality of their beam profile, and the amount of radiation that can couple into the far-field. This highly-cited paper reports the first demonstration of 2D photonic crystal patterning with appropriate absorbing/reflecting boundaries to engineer low-divergence surface emission. It consolidated an internationally-leading collaboration between Leeds, Paris South, Paris 7, and Cambridge, and underpinned ERC Advanced Grants ‘NOTES’ (228035, PI:Davies, €1,542,600) and ‘TOSCA’ (247375, PI:Linfield, €2,491,989), and a Royal Society/Wolfson Research Merit award (Davies).
