Additional information

Originally deriving from an invited contribution to a Royal Society discussion on future needs for engineered surfaces, this paper identifies and brings together, from many physical fields, the implications of the effect of dimensional scaling in engineering applications. Hence, it argues for an urgent need for new approaches in both design and refining of micro-systems and makes some initial proposals for best routes to explore. Impact (through standardisation) will take at least a decade to judge fully (Prof. X Jian, Director EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacture in Advanced Metrology, x.jiang@hud.ac.uk).
