26 screenprints and editioned book
This body of work is based on, and brings together, two elements of Butler's research: primary research into the urban street typography through location drawing; and the relationships between the visual sequence as experienced in book form and in a wall-based exhibition. This latter element is a response to the definition of “an authentic bookwork” as one where the rhythm suffers if the units are placed in a row on a gallery wall (Ulises Carrion, Bookworks Revisited, 1980)
Thematically, this body of work investigates the manner in which a city’s unique culture is reflected through its street typography and lettering. The staring point for the research is a large series of drawings made on location in numerous European cities including Dublin, Cadiz, Madrid, Porto, Budapest, Naples, Rome, Innsbruck and Cambridge. These were developed into a series of screenprints and artists' books, one of which has been editioned.
