Additional information

This was a special issue of the Journal on the theme of “Manuscript Census Schedules and Demographic Research”, co-edited by Liam Kennedy and Lucia Pozzi (80%). This article drew heavily on Kennedy’s database of 40, 000 individuals, drawn from the census manuscript returns for Belfast for 1901 and 1911. The compilation of the database was grant-aided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Northern Ireland. The paper was written by Kennedy, and the analysis of the data involved Kennedy and two Italian colleagues (a historian and an econometrician). Kennedy’s overall contribution was in the region of 80% (or more) and the article was peer-reviewed.
