Additional information

This essay continues Walker’s research into the relationship between documentary photography and Surrealism. It examines the ways in which Ruscha’s “Twenty Six Gasoline Stations” has been repositioned over the last 40 years within the evolving history of art and photography. In a blend of scholarly writing, anecdote and personal account, Walker places particular emphasis on the later and less well-known part of the story, from the mid-1970s on, when Ruscha’s work found a place within the developing understanding of photography.
