Brief description

First edition of the two largest medieval Welsh proverb collections (1085 + 615 proverbs), both in the Red Book of Hergest circa 1400. An introduction discusses sources and their mostly ‘non-Celtic’ character. There are linguistic and textual notes comparing parallels in earlier and later Welsh, Latin, French, English, German etc. An appendix edits further proverbs from the earlier Peniarth 17. There is a concordance with the Thesaurus Proverbiorum Medii Aevi, a bibliography and a glossary.
