Additional information

<28> The concept of a fitness landscape is central to understanding how evolution works in detail, and to an understanding of evolutionary dynamics. This paper is significant because it pioneers a new method for exploring real DNA fitness landscapes: the system "evolves" a population of DNA strands by synthesising them on a microarray platform, measures their binding to a target, and sends the information to a computer, which then instructs the microarray platform about which DNA strands to make next. Machine learning techniques are used to predict the properties of unseen DNA strands to a high level of accuracy.
