Pamela Clemit was the sole editor of this volume. It presents the first edition of 1794 in paperback for the first time (thus superseding all other paperback editions, which print the last edition of 1831), with selected variants from the second and third editions. The output includes a critical introduction of 8,500 words; a chronology; an extensive guide to further reading; explanatory notes; and appendices (containing the rejected manuscript ending, the withheld 1794 preface, the variants previously mentioned, and Godwin's 1832 account of the composition of the novel).
