Additional information

This paper was an output from an EPSRC/DTI LINK Scheme in Surface Engineering (GR/K87418/01). It was the first work to characterise the behaviour of micro-crystalline CVD diamond coatings for mechanical sealing applications, and is significant because it demonstrates a link between coating process parameters and tribological performance. Using testing and mathematical modelling it shows how the governing coating processes can be manipulated to generate specific surface properties and conditions that optimise wear rate and frictional behaviour. The paper was chosen as the “Paper of the Month” by the Editor of Tribology Transactions.
