This paper disseminates findings from a practical retrofit project to inform the debate on carbon reduction in the housing sector. The research was funded by Gentoo Green, part of Gentoo Group. The project findings have been disseminated to the Department of Energy and Climate Change by the industry sponsor, Gentoo Green. The project was winner of the Innovation Award 2011 from Constructing Excellence North East. As a result of the research, the authors were invited to present at 2011 conference "Retrofit the Region" (Newcastle) organised by Northern Architecture (the Architecture Centre for NE England).
